Ares Slept

The sounds are loud.
It is very, very dark.
As the Sun fell I tried to see,
see the chaos
that the moon brought as it rose
but my petals curled
out of absence of light
out of fear
I do not know
but I can't see
The Sun is gone and I can't see
my petals are closed and I can't see
I'm afraid, and I can't see

I feel bad.
I feel sorry for the grass.
I can hear it struggle, thinking
it can support the dead man as he falls
but I can't say much
My petals are closed.
I hear the crunch.

The people are leaving.
Not willingly; they're falling, dying.
And I can't see because
my petals are closed
but I hear the screams
feel the blood hit me
I feel it
but I do not see it
I hear it
the red on my red
I'm scared.

They too are scared now.
I can hear the voices.
They speak of something coming.
They need to go
I hear the shoves
They too are scared
I am scared.
My petals are closed and I can't see
Something fires.
Screams.
I feel them
climbing over each other
A resounding whistle through the air
it comes closer
I hear them stop
Voices.
No, prayers.
They pray.
Frantic.
I feel the wind shift.
Everything silent.
A force.
The impact.

My petals are open now
and I
am gone.

  1. This is so beautiful. The feeling of helplessness, immobility and blindness are portrayed so well here through this rose stuck in the middle of a war (I might be getting the message wrong but that's what I got out of this). I also love how the short sentences and the repetition highlights the fear and desperation of the rose. Just beautiful. (Again, I mighta got the message wrong but the fact that remains is that THIS IS AMAZING). Also my favourite lines are 'My petals are closed and I can't see' and 'My petals are open now and I am gone'.
