Hidden Truth: A War Sonnet

By dusk the smoke ascends from perished flames
Shed tears and blood corrode the ravaged soil
Among the dead who have but not a name
Crickets strum harmonies of vile turmoil

Thunder shatters the sky, a burning flash
Shining light for despaired mourners to see
That despite the triumph etched on the ash
For mankind this is not a victory

A nightmare for all, terminus for some
The waving flag is where the demons dwell
A denouement to all that is to come
Upon the grounds where morals go to hell

A message rises from inside the squall
If we don’t end war it will end us all
