Persephone's Cadence

With Spring things start new
Flowers separated by the cold of the latter months peek from behind their ice capped tips
Blow a little breath to clear the mist
Shake lightly to brush off the frost
And gaze at the warmth of the Sun
recalling how last Spring
it used to shine slightly brighter

And dew settles on their petals-
Tears of the morning
Taking in the light that seems toned down
Hushed by the cold
Dampened by the rain
Nipped by the cold of the latter months
and the Spring that some months ago
promised birds chirping and rainbows arching
seems oddly silent today

But it’s no matter
for the sun has only just woken from its slumber
It too needs time to fully rise
So once it reclaims its place at the tip of the sky
The mist will clear
The dew shall disperse
The flowers will bloom again
And the cold of the latter months

Will long be forgotten.

  1. I love that you've written about Persephone and her plight. This is one of my favourite myths, although it's bittersweet. I feel like this poem subtly touches on her distress but the arrival of spring keeps her from dwelling on it and instead, makes her hopeful for a new start to the year. The image in this poem also has a flower just like the last one...I feel like you're onto something (I would be extremely excited if you were to take on more greek myths).
